Dear Friend,
Have you ever wondered why parents, who you know love their children, treat them in a way
they would never even think of treating anyone else?
I had long been disturbed by what I had seen parents do and say to their children. As a
Montessori teacher I had learned to value children as the workers that are creating adults.
Of course I was not raised that way, being honored and valued for the work of creating who I
was to be as an adult. So I could understand where those parents were coming from, but still it
disturbed me.
This state of affairs went on for some time. I began to avoid being with parents and children.
Except I was working as a Montessori teacher, in a school we had started! But I avoided it as
much as possible.

I was passing through a nearby town and stopped to check out a rummage sale. I was casually
looking at some baby clothes. I picked up a little shirt and looked at the price.
For some reason, I noticed something written on the back of that price tag (It's amazing how
we are led to discoveries, isn't it).
I started reading it. I read everything. It was a scrap of the Emancipation Proclamation. All of a
sudden, there was a burst of insight in my mind!
I knew what had been disturbing me for all this time: We treat our children as slaves! (By
the way, since that time, one young boy and two teenage girls have told me the same thing.)
